Anthony Davis Returned to 5-on-5 Practice After Eye Surgery
Dallas Mavericks star forward Anthony Davis returned to the practice floor late last week for 5-on-5 play, NBA insider Marc Stein of The Stein Line reported Saturday.
“It’s believed to be Davis’ first game-speed action since it emerged in July that he needed eye surgery to mend a detached retina,” Stein posted on X.
Anthony Davis Underwent Eye Surgery In July
The latest update is encouraging for Mavericks fan, as Stein previously reported that the former No. 1 overall pick wasn’t fully back on the court on Sept. 11.
Davis, 32, suffered the eye injury during the 2024-25 season, and he underwent surgery on his eye back in July, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The 10-time All-Star is expected to be ready in time for training camp, his first with the Mavs since being dealt to Dallas in the blockbuster trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Davis sustained his right eye injury in Dallas’ 120-118 win over the Atlanta Hawks on April 2. His teammate, Daniel Gafford, inadvertently elbowed him in his eye.
The former NBA champion left the game bleeding and returned with a bandage above his right eye. A cut above his eye required four stitches. He went on to finish with 34 points against Atlanta.
Davis Missed Time Last Season Due To A Left Adductor Strain
Per Basketball Reference, Davis played in just 11 games for Dallas last season, counting two play-in games in which he averaged 33.5 points and nine rebounds.
In his Mavs debut on Feb. 8 against the Houston Rockets, Davis also suffered a left adductor strain that sidelined him for about six weeks. He recorded 26 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists, and three blocks before exiting.
Davis could potentially take on an even larger role next season with Kyrie Irving expected to be sidelined until at least January while he recovers from a torn ACL.
Dallas’ frontcourt received another much-needed addition in the offseason in Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft. Flagg enters the NBA as one of the most hyped prospects since LeBron James.
The Mavericks will open training camp on Monday, Sept. 29.
