Luka Doncic Signs Three-Year, $165M Contract Extension With Lakers

Luka Doncic Signs Three-Year, $165M Contract Extension With Los Angeles Lakers

Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic agreed to a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension, with a player option in 2028, agent Bill Duffy of WME Basketball told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Saturday.

Luka Doncic Could Sign Five-Year, $417 Million Contract In 2028

The new deal keeps Doncic out of free agency next summer, eliminating his 2026-27 player option. His previous player option was part of the five-year, $215.15 million extension he signed with the Dallas Mavericks in 2021.

According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the five-time All-Star guard could opt out of his three-year contract in 2028 and sign a new deal for 35% of the salary cap, which projects to five years and $417 million.

In doing so, Doncic would recoup all the money lost when he was traded by the Mavericks, with whom he had been eligible to sign a five-year, $315 million supermax extension this summer.

The 26-year-old was also eligible to sign a four-year, $229 million max extension with Los Angeles. That deal would have featured the $51 million first-year salary for 2026-27, replacing the player option for that season, per Marks.

Doncic Seeks To Bring Another NBA Title To Los Angeles

The Lakers announced Saturday that they had signed Doncic to an extension but did not disclose the terms.

“I’m really grateful to the Lakers organization, my teammates and the fans for welcoming me and my family with so much support and kindness since day one,” Doncic said in a statement.

“This is an amazing organization, and I truly believe in what we’re building together. I’m going to keep working as hard as I can to bring another championship to Los Angeles and to make Laker Nation proud.

“This is just the beginning. I’m excited for what’s ahead and to keep building something special with this team.”

The Lakers acquired Doncic from the Mavericks for Anthony Davis six months ago in one of the most surprising trades in NBA history. It was the biggest acquisition for the Purple and Gold since trading for Kobe Bryant in 1996.

Doncic Led Lakers In Multiple Stats Last Season

Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka called Doncic “one of the game’s most transcendent players” as part of the extension announcement, per Charania.

“Luka is an absolute killer on the court, and blends that with a unique generosity and care for the community,” Pelinka said. “Above all else, Luka will lead our franchise to pursue future championships, a goal that will forever define the Lakers.”

In 28 games (all starts) with the Lakers last season, Doncic averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists, 1.6 steals, and 35.1 minutes per contest while shooting 43.8% from the field and 37.9% from deep.

He led L.A. in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and 3-pointers per game.
