Lakers’ Luka Doncic Out At Least 1 Week With Finger, Leg Injuries

Los Angeles Lakers Luka Doncic Out At Least 1 Week With Finger, Leg Injuries

Los Angeles Lakers superstar will be sidelined for approximately one week due to a left finger sprain and lower left leg contusion, the team announced Sunday morning.

Luka Doncic To Be Re-Evaluated In One Week

The Lakers are reportedly optimistic that Doncic will not need extended time for recovery beyond the initial estimated timeline, sources close to the team told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

“It just kind of was something that happened,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said of Doncic’s leg injury during his postgame interview after Sunday night’s 127-120 win at Sacramento.

“I wasn’t even aware of it after the game. I became aware of it, obviously, yesterday and overnight, whatever he felt from that hit, it just materialized. So obviously we want to be safe here.”

The Lakers are already without LeBron James, who is sitting out the start of the season due to sciatica in his right side, and now they will be missing their leading scorer.

Doncic Sets Lakers Record With 92 Points

In Los Angeles’ 128-110 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night, Doncic shattered Jerry West’s 56-year franchise record of 81 points scored through the first two games of a season.

After Doncic scored 43 points in the Lakers’ 119-109 season-opener loss to the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday, he put up 49 points and hit five 3-pointers against the Timberwolves to bring his point total to 92.

Doncic also became the first player in Lakers history with consecutive 40-point games to start a season and just the fourth in NBA history, joining Anthony Davis, Michael Jordan, and Wilt Chamberlain.

“We’re going to need offense from other guys,” Redick said. “Everything’s got to be done within the framework of what we’re trying to do.”

Lakers center Jaxson Hayes was also not available against the Kings, missing a second straight game because of left knee soreness. The 7-footer re-signed with the team on a one-year deal over the summer.

L.A. plays the Portland Trail Blazers on the second night of a back-to-back on Monday, then is on the road against the Timberwolves on Wednesday and the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday before returning to host the Miami Heat next Sunday.
